Mindful Medical Student- The Beginning

In the spirit of the New Year and the fact that everyone nowadays has started some form of an informative blog to speak his or her mind, share wisdom and communicate valuable knowledge to a wider audience, I feel like it is time to join in. Having gleaned so much from reading numerous blogs and webpages- it feels only right to start something that can hopefully pay forward or give back to others in the community blogging on a regular basis.

About Me: I am a third year medical student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va and have seen quite a lot during my first two years of "basic science" training. During this time I have come to realize the true value of a U.S. medical education, while precise and intensive, is quite limited in scope when it comes to understanding and treating illness. It is only from following the work within Lifestyle, Functional, Ancestral, Integrative, Holistic Medicine or whatever term you want to use, that one can truly being to appreciate and "practice" medicine. From my personal experiences in practicing mindfulness, yoga, meditation and living a lifestyle founded on our evolutionary and ancestral past, I have come to realize just how important these practices are for one's well being. By integrating modern medicine and the technological advances that have made it possible to diagnose everything from abnormal heart rhythms and skin cancer using an I-Phone with the wonders of proper movement, restorative sleep, sufficient sunlight, a whole foods diet and social/spiritual engagement, I truly believe we can bring not only wellness, but vitality to everyone who seeks it.

What to Expect: This blog will hopefully be an informative platform for me to share my experiences over the course of my medical training in conjunction with my personal mindfulness practices. I hope to share insights from my work with fellow medical and nursing students as part of a interdisciplinary student organization called CALM- Compassionate Awareness and Living Mindfully. As a group, it is our mission to provide the resources and knowledge for those who seek it to practice mindfulness and live compassionately in all aspects of life. From yoga and meditation to simple mindful eating we can all utilize these practices for achieving optimal health. For those of you familiar with the blog "Zen Habits" by Leo Babauta: http://zenhabits.net , I hope to bring some of this similar mindful wisdom to others, in addition to posts regarding more scientific/medically related research topics. If for anything, a blog with no readers is a journal of one's inner being, and for that reason, we can all realize true wellness from blogging- who would have thought.

First Post: For my first official post, I would like to share a link to the Compassionate Care Initiative at the University of Virginia.

Web Page: http://compassion.nursing.virginia.edu

The mission of this group as founded by numerous mindful healers at UVa is simple: "To Cultivate a Resilient and Compassionate Healthcare Workforce." While I have to sadly say there is not such a specific initiative directly through the UVa School of Medicine- the leaders of the CCI are more than willing to share their teachings and practices to all those who seek personal wellness. It has been my  pleasure to engage in both work and play with members of this Nursing School Initiative and it is my hope that such a message can be brought to not only members of the local Charlottesville, Va community- but to other communities nationwide. I encourage everyone involved in healthcare to seek out such a movement or initiative within their own community in an effort to bring greater wellness to our nation. It of course sounds profound, but positive change has to start somewhere and certainly mindful and compassionate health care is something we all desire.
